Van de Ven Double Ends The Toffees' Run at New Home Ground

The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.
