Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using such medications need to be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
